Living in Keego Harbor, MI: A Local’s Guide

Keego Harbor is a half-square-mile city on the eastern shore of Cass Lake, about 27 miles northwest of downtown Detroit. The whole place is 0.49 square miles, which makes it one of the smaller incorporated cities in Oakland County. People move here for one reason more than any other: lake access. You can own a modest home a few blocks off the water and still get to a public swim site on Cass Lake on a hot July afternoon. Plan on roughly 35 to 45 minutes to drive downtown in normal traffic. Pontiac is about eight minutes up the road.

What Keego Harbor is known for

The water. Keego Harbor wraps around the east side of Cass Lake, holds Dollar Lake inside its own borders, and sits next door to Sylvan Lake. The city name itself comes from the water: a real estate developer named Joseph Sawyer dredged a canal connecting Dollar Lake to Cass Lake in the early 1900s, called the spot a harbor, and borrowed "Keego" from Longfellow's poem The Song of Hiawatha, a spelling of an Anishinaabe word for fish.
The second thing is how compact it is. At under half a square mile, Keego Harbor runs more like a tight lake town than a sprawling suburb. You can walk most of it. The third thing is the school district, which is a real draw for families and covered further down.
Small and seasonal. Summer is the loud season here, with boats on Cass Lake and people walking to the swim sites and the parks. Winter is quiet. Because the city is so small, neighbors tend to know each other and the local government is close at hand.
The trade-off for the lake life is space. Lots are generally tight and many of the homes are older and modest. This is not a place with big new-construction subdivisions. If you want a manicured half-acre, you'll look in neighboring West Bloomfield Township instead. If you want to be steps from the water without a Bloomfield Hills price tag, Keego Harbor is the move.

Prices in Keego Harbor swing hard on water access. A renovated home a block from Cass Lake and a comparable house on the far edge of the city can sit a long way apart on price, so a citywide median only tells you so much. Getting around

Getting around
Two roads carry Keego Harbor: Orchard Lake Road and Cass Lake Road. They run through the heart of town and connect everything. From there, M-59 (Highland Road) is a few minutes north and runs east-west across the metro. I-696 sits to the south and ties into I-75 and the rest of the freeway grid. Telegraph Road (US-24) is a major north-south artery just east.

Is Keego Harbor a good place to buy?

For the right buyer, yes. If you want lake access in Oakland County without paying Orchard Lake or Bloomfield money, Keego Harbor is one of the few realistic doors in. You get the West Bloomfield school district, walkable parks, and Cass Lake shoreline in a city you can cross in a few minutes.
The homes
The housing stock here skews older and smaller. Much of it dates to the mid-20th century, a mix of cottages and starter homes that grew up around the lake, many of them since updated or renovated. You'll find classic smaller houses next to homes that have been gutted and modernized. Waterfront and near-water lots command the highest prices, and a property's distance to Cass Lake or to one of the parks moves the number more than almost anything else. Lots are generally compact. This is a lake town's housing pattern, not a subdivision's.
Schools
Keego Harbor is served entirely by the West Bloomfield School District, which also covers West Bloomfield Township, Orchard Lake Village, and part of Sylvan Lake. The district ranks #30 among Michigan school districts and West Bloomfield High School ranks #35 among Michigan public high schools on Niche (2026). School boundaries and assigned buildings can change, so confirm the assigned schools for any specific address before you buy.
