Hazel Park is a small Oakland County city of about 14,983 people, packed into roughly three square miles right on Detroit's northern border. It sits at the corner of two freeways, which is most of the reason people move here. You get a short commute downtown, a smaller mortgage than you'd pay a few suburbs north, and a street grid of modest single-family homes. Downtown Detroit is about 11 miles south, roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive on I-75 outside of rush hour. What Hazel Park is known for

Three things, mostly.
The first is location. Hazel Park sits at the I-75 and I-696 interchange, so you can get into Detroit, out to the western suburbs, or up to the Oakland County job centers without much fuss.
The second is the Tri-County Commerce Center. It's a 2.1-million-square-foot industrial campus built by Ashley Capital on the site of the old Hazel Park Raceway, which closed in 2018 after about 70 years as a horse track. The center now houses an Amazon distribution facility, LG Electronics, and Bridgewater Interiors, and it brought several thousand jobs to a city that used to be defined by that racetrack.
The third is the food. A stretch of John R Road has quietly become a dining destination. Mabel Gray, opened by chef James Rigato in a former Coney Island diner in 2015, won Detroit Free Press Restaurant of the Year in 2017 and put the city on a lot of regional food maps.
Dense and walkable in spots, plain and practical overall. The lots are small and the houses sit close to the street, so you know your neighbors whether you mean to or not. It's a working-class city that's been drawing in younger buyers and renovators over the last decade, partly because prices stayed reasonable while neighboring Ferndale and Royal Oak climbed. You won't find big-box sprawl or gated subdivisions. You'll find a tight grid of streets, a couple of commercial corridors, and a handful of parks.
The pace is low-key. People shop the John R and Dequindre corridors, walk to the recreation center, and turn out for the annual Art Fair. It's a city you can cross in ten minutes.

The Tri-County Commerce Center jobs are inside the city limits, so for a chunk of residents the commute is a few minutes. For everyone else, the freeway access is the whole point.

For the right buyer, yes. If your priority is a short commute to Detroit, a payment you can carry, and a neighborhood that's been on an upswing instead of a downswing, Hazel Park delivers. You get freeway access, real restaurants, and a price point that's increasingly rare this close to the city.
The homes
The housing stock is small and older. Expect post-war ranches and bungalows on compact lots, most of them single-family, many built in the boom decades after the city incorporated in 1941. Interiors run the full range: untouched originals, partial updates, and full renovations from the wave of buyers who've moved in over the last ten years. Square footage is modest by suburban standards. The trade is square footage for price and location, and for a lot of buyers that math works.
Schools
Most of Hazel Park is served by Hazel Park Schools, which also covers a portion of Ferndale. It's a small district, around 2,900 students. Hazel Park High School carries a C+ grade on Niche for 2026, with a 92% graduation rate, so the academic picture is mixed and worth looking at carefully if schools are driving your search.
