What Berkley is known for

Berkley School District serves the whole city, and it ranks well: #16 best school district in Michigan on Niche's 2026 list. Angell Elementary opened in 1921 and is the oldest continuously operating elementary school in Oakland County.

The downtown runs along 12 Mile Road and Coolidge Highway, a real walkable main street with restaurants, bars, coffee, and small retail instead of a strip mall. And once a year the cars take over. Berkley CruiseFest, the city's own classic-car parade on 12 Mile, has run for more than 25 years and lands the night before the Woodward Dream Cruise.

Tight and friendly. The lots are small, the houses sit close, and there are sidewalks on most streets, so you actually run into your neighbors. People walk to dinner. Kids bike to the park.

It's quieter than Royal Oak but borrows Royal Oak's nightlife next door. The trade-off for that density is space: yards are modest and garages are often detached and old. If you want acreage, this isn't the town. If you want to know the barista's name and walk to a Friday-night burger, it is.

Getting around

Berkley's two main arteries are 12 Mile Road (east-west) and Coolidge Highway (north-south), and they cross right at downtown. Woodward Avenue (M-1) runs along the eastern edge of the city. No interstate cuts through Berkley itself, but I-696 is just to the north and I-75 is close by, so most commutes start with a short hop to a freeway ramp. Detroit is about 14 miles southeast. Royal Oak, Oak Park, and Southfield all border the city, which puts a lot of jobs and hospitals inside a 15-minute radius.
