Community Conversations: Detroit Bubble Tea

Welcome to Community Conversations, where we highlight the people and businesses that make our local neighborhoods thrive. In this feature, we sat down virtually with Arun Prasad, the owner of Detroit Bubble Tea, to talk about entrepreneurship, community, and what it means to build a business in the heart of Metro Detroit.

Hosted by Jim Shaffer & Associates, this interview explores how Arun and his wife, Alycia, first got started, why they chose Ferndale as their home base, and the challenges they faced while navigating the pandemic as small business owners.

Detroit Bubble Tea is a proud part of the Woodward Corridor community, and supporting local partners like this is central to our mission. Through our Community Conversations series, we aim to showcase the passion, creativity, and resilience that define the neighborhoods we serve.

What is bubble tea? Arun describes it as a refreshing drink similar to a slushy or iced tea, available in many creative formats. At the bottom are boba—also known as tapioca pearls—that give bubble tea its signature texture. All teas at Detroit Bubble Tea are freshly brewed and organic, with sugar-free and vegan options available, making it a favorite spot for locals throughout Ferndale, Michigan.

In addition to beverages, Detroit Bubble Tea offers a selection of snacks and treats, including macarons, cookies from local favorite D’vine Cookies, and Great Lakes Potato Chips. These partnerships reflect the same community-first mindset that drives many small businesses featured by our real estate team.

The story behind Detroit Bubble Tea began six years ago, when the Ferndale Radio Shack closed its doors. Inspired to try something new, Alycia Prasad took a leap of faith, and together with Arun, launched a business they believed their city would embrace. Having lived in Ferndale for years, they knew the community would rally behind them—and they were right.

As Jim often says, “Ferndale is a small town with a great big heart.” Stories like this are why our local agents and community advocates are passionate about supporting neighborhood businesses that make living here so special.
