Living in White Lake, MI: A Local’s Guide
White Lake Charter Township covers about 37 square miles of Oakland County, and roughly a tenth of that is water. There are 21 lakes inside its borders. People move here for that: a lake-and-woods setting that still puts you inside Metro Detroit's commuter range. The township sits about 19 miles northwest of the Detroit city limits and roughly 10 miles from downtown Pontiac, so a drive to downtown Detroit runs around 41 miles and close to 50 minutes in normal traffic. Pontiac Lake Recreation Area falls inside the township, and the larger Highland Recreation Area sits right on the western edge, spanning White Lake and neighboring Highland Township. Between them you get thousands of acres of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.
Third, Alpine Valley Ski Area on Highland Road. It opened in 1961 and is one of the closest downhill ski and snowboard hills to the Detroit metro, which makes White Lake a rare suburb where you can ski a few minutes from home in winter.
Spread out. This is a township, not a downtown grid, so daily life runs along the main roads rather than a single walkable center. M-59 (Highland Road) is the spine. Most of the shopping, restaurants, and services line up along that corridor, and you drive to nearly everything.
The trade for that is space and water. Many neighborhoods are wooded subdivisions or lake associations, and a fair number of homes sit on or near a lake. It reads more rural than a place like Royal Oak or Ferndale, and that is the point for the people who choose it. Summers are about boats, docks, and the rec areas. Winters bring skiing at Alpine Valley and trail use in the state land.

Is White Lake a good place to buy?
It's a good fit if you want space, water, and the outdoors, and you're fine driving for it. The honest trade-off is the commute and the car dependence. There's no walkable downtown and no freeway through the township, so you'll spend time on M-59 and you'll drive to nearly everything. In return you get lake access, larger lots, recreation land at your doorstep, and a quieter setting than the inner suburbs at a price that often beats them per square foot. If a short commute or a walk-to-coffee lifestyle is the priority, look closer in. If lake-and-woods living is the priority, few Metro Detroit townships do it better.
The homes
The housing stock is mixed and skews newer than the older Detroit suburbs. You'll find postwar lake cottages (some expanded into year-round homes), 1970s and 1980s subdivision houses, and a good share of newer construction in wooded developments. Lots run larger than in the inner-ring suburbs, and lake-frontage and lake-access homes form their own segment with their own pricing. Ranches, colonials, and contemporary builds all show up. Because so much depends on water access and lot, two homes with similar square footage can sit far apart on price.
Schools
Most of White Lake Township is served by Huron Valley Schools. The district also covers Highland, Milford, and parts of Commerce. Its White Lake high school, Lakeland High School on Bogie Lake Road, placed around #115 among Michigan public high schools on Niche's 2026 rankings, and White Lake Middle School sits in the same district. Because township lines and district lines don't match, parts of White Lake fall into other districts (Walled Lake, Waterford, Clarkston, and Holly). School assignment runs by address, not by township, so confirm the exact boundary for any home before you count on a given school.
