Living in Walled Lake, MI: A Local’s Guide

Walled Lake is a 2.2-square-mile city in Oakland County built around the lake it's named for. About 7,250 people live here, and the draw is simple: a small lakefront town that sits close to the work, schools, and shopping of the western suburbs without feeling like any of them. It pulls in families who want a yard and a good district, commuters who want a shorter drive than the far exurbs, and people who want to live near water without paying Birmingham or Bloomfield prices. Downtown Detroit is about 32 miles southeast, roughly a 35 to 40 minute drive on a normal day.

What Walled Lake is known for

Three things, mostly.
The lake itself. Walled Lake (the water) anchors the city's identity and its history. The name comes from a low stone wall along part of the shoreline that some accounts attribute to the Potawatomi. Homes near the water carry a premium, and the waterfront shapes how people spend summers here.
The amusement park that used to be here. From 1929 to 1968, Walled Lake Amusement Park ran on the lake's edge, with a dance casino that drew big-band crowds before it burned in 1965. The park is long gone. Pavilion Shore Park sits on part of that ground now, so the spot stayed public.
The Foster Farmhouse. Built in 1833, it served as a station on the Underground Railroad. To save it from demolition, the city moved it to Riley Park in downtown Walled Lake in 1997, where it still stands.
Quieter than the numbers suggest. It's a real city with its own government and school identity, but it's small, and a lot of daily life happens in the surrounding townships (Commerce, West Bloomfield, Novi) because that's where the bigger stores and corporate jobs are. People come back to Walled Lake for the lake, the parks, and the neighborhood feel.
It reads as a working, lived-in town rather than a polished destination. Some streets are tight and older. Others were built or rebuilt more recently. The lake is the social center in summer. The rest of the year, this is a commuter town with good road access in several directions.

Price in Walled Lake swings hard on micro-location. Lake frontage, lake access, and a quiet street versus a busy one can separate two similar houses by a wide margin, so a citywide median only tells you part of the story. Downtown and getting around

Downtown Walled Lake
Downtown Walled Lake is compact. Riley Park is the gathering spot, home to the relocated Foster Farmhouse and the city's community events. This isn't a long restaurant-and-boutique main street like some Oakland County downtowns. It's smaller and more local. For a bigger night out or a full shopping run, most residents head to Novi or West Bloomfield, both a short drive away.
Getting around
Walled Lake's road access is better than its size implies. **M-5** ends at a roundabout with **Pontiac Trail** just outside the city in Commerce Township, and from M-5 you connect to **I-696** and **I-275** for trips to Detroit, the airport, and Ann Arbor. The local arterials are **Pontiac Trail**, **Maple Road**, and **14 Mile Road**, with Pontiac Trail doubling as a regional commuter route. Daily life here assumes a car. The downtown Detroit commute runs around 32 miles and 35 to 40 minutes without heavy traffic.

Is Walled Lake a good place to buy?

For the right buyer, yes. You get genuine lake access and a recognized school district at prices that generally run below the higher-end Oakland County names, plus strong road access in several directions. That's a real combination.
The homes
The housing stock is mixed and spans several eras. You'll find smaller post-war homes and older lake cottages near the water, ranches and split-levels from the suburban build-out decades, and newer infill and subdivision houses on the city's edges. Lot sizes and condition vary a lot block to block. Lakefront and lake-access properties are their own category and price tier. There are also condos and rentals in the mix, which keeps an entry point open for first-time buyers who want the address without a full single-family budget.
Schools
Most of Walled Lake is served by **Walled Lake Consolidated School District**, which also covers parts of Commerce Township, Novi, West Bloomfield, and Wixom. The district's high schools rank well in the state: Walled Lake Central came in at #81 and Walled Lake Northern at #89 among Michigan public high schools on Niche's 2026 list. Boundaries here don't follow city lines cleanly, and which elementary, middle, and high school a given house feeds into depends on the exact address. Confirm the assigned schools for any specific property before you count on them.
