Lathrup Village is a 1.51-square-mile city in Oakland County, completely surrounded by Southfield. It's small. The 2020 census counted 4,088 residents, and the whole place sits inside a single zip code (48076). People move here for the houses and the quiet, not for nightlife or a main street. Most of the city is a planned residential community that dates to the 1920s, with curving streets and brick homes on mature lots. Downtown Detroit is about 17 miles south, roughly a 25-to-30-minute drive depending on which freeway you take and the time of day.

What Lathrup Village is known for

Three things stand out.
First, the houses and the street plan. A big chunk of the city is the Lathrup Village Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. It covers about 1,150 buildings, most of them contributing historic homes. The original developer, Louise Lathrup Kelley, bought the land in 1923 and built it out with rules that were unusual for the era: masonry construction (brick, stone, or stucco fronts) and minimum build costs to keep quality high. You can still see that in the housing stock today.
Second, location. The city is wrapped entirely by Southfield, one of the largest office markets in Michigan. That means a short drive to corporate jobs, hospitals, and big-box shopping without living in the middle of it.
Third, the small-town feel inside a metro. With about 4,000 residents and a city hall that runs concerts, a Winter Market, and a Fall Fest, Lathrup Village functions more like a tight neighborhood than a typical suburb.
Residential and calm. There's no traditional downtown strip, so day-to-day life leans on the surrounding Southfield corridors for groceries, restaurants, and services, all of which are a few minutes away. The streets curve instead of running on a grid, which slows traffic and gives the older sections a distinct character.
The city is small enough to cross in about four minutes by car. That scale shows up in community life too. Municipal Park, behind City Hall, hosts free summer concerts, a Juneteenth celebration, and a day-long August music festival run with the Downtown Development Authority. It's the kind of place where city events are walkable for a lot of residents.

Lathrup Village punches above its size on highway access. I-696 (the Reuther Freeway) runs east-west along the southern edge of the city near 11 Mile Road, so on-ramps are minutes from most homes. M-10 (the Lodge Freeway) and M-39 (the Southfield Freeway) are both a short drive away, which opens up routes into Detroit, to the airport, and out to the rest of Oakland County.

Is Lathrup Village a good place to buy?

Schools
