Living in Bloomfield Township, MI: A Local’s Guide

Bloomfield Township was established in 1827, which makes it the oldest township in Oakland County. It covers about 26 square miles between Woodward Avenue and Telegraph Road, and it's home to roughly 44,000 people. Most of them moved here for the same reasons: good schools, lake lots, big wooded parcels, and a short drive to Birmingham, Troy, and downtown Detroit. Downtown Detroit sits about 20 miles southeast, a drive of roughly 23 miles and a little over half an hour in normal traffic. Officially this is the Charter Township of Bloomfield, and locals just call it Bloomfield Township to keep it separate from the small city of Bloomfield Hills it wraps around.

What Bloomfield Township is known for

Three things, mostly. First, the schools. Most of the township feeds into Bloomfield Hills Schools, one of the top-rated public districts in the state. Second, the lakes. There's a whole string of them inside the township: Wing, Square, Upper Long, Lower Long, Turtle, Wabeek, and Forest. Lakefront and lake-access homes are a big part of the market here. Third, the golf. Oakland Hills Country Club, on the township's south side, has hosted six U.S. Opens and the 2004 Ryder Cup. It's one of the most decorated golf clubs in the country.
The township also sits next to two cultural anchors in neighboring Bloomfield Hills: the Cranbrook campus and Kirk in the Hills, the Gothic stone church on Long Lake. Plenty of Bloomfield Township residents treat both as their backyard.
Quiet and green. This isn't a downtown-with-a-main-street kind of place. It's a residential township, which means winding roads, mature trees, and lots set well back from the street. You drive to most things. The trade-off is space and privacy: large yards, wooded lots, and water views you don't get closer to the city.
The pace is slow in the best sense. Neighbors know each other, the parks fill up on weekends, and the township runs its own police and fire. It reads as established money rather than new development. Many of the homes have been here for decades, and so have a lot of the families.

Bloomfield Township is laid out around four major roads: Woodward Avenue on the east, Telegraph Road on the west, Square Lake Road across the north, and Maple Road across the south. Those are maintained by the Road Commission for Oakland County. I-75 runs just north and east of the township, which is the fast way south to Detroit or north toward Auburn Hills and Flint. Telegraph and Woodward both run straight into the city if you'd rather skip the freeway. Birmingham, Troy, and Pontiac are all a short hop, and Detroit's downtown is about 23 miles and a little over half an hour out.

Is Bloomfield Township a good place to buy?

If you want top schools, space, and quiet, yes, and you'll pay for it. This is one of the pricier markets in the state, and you're buying privacy and land more than walkable convenience. The honest trade-off: you'll drive for almost everything, and a lot of homes are older and may want updating. If a short walk to shops and restaurants is high on your list, neighboring Birmingham fits that better. If you'd trade the walkability for a wooded lot, good schools, and maybe a lake out back, Bloomfield Township is hard to beat.
The homes
The housing stock is older and varied. You'll find mid-century ranches, traditional brick colonials, mid-size family homes on wooded lots, and at the top end, estate properties and custom builds, including lakefront. A lot of these homes date to the postwar decades through the 1980s, with newer infill and tear-down rebuilds scattered through the established neighborhoods. Lot sizes tend to be generous. This is one of the more expensive places to live in Michigan, and the range from entry-level to estate is wide.
Schools
Most of Bloomfield Township is served by Bloomfield Hills Schools, which Niche ranked #7 among Michigan school districts in 2026 with an overall A+ grade. Parts of the township fall into Birmingham Public Schools, and smaller portions into Avondale and Pontiac schools.
