Huntington Woods is a 1.49-square-mile city in Oakland County with about 6,400 residents and just over 2,000 homes. It sits between Ten Mile and Eleven Mile roads, with Woodward Avenue on its east edge and Coolidge Highway on the west. People move here for one thing above all: the houses and the streets they sit on. It's almost entirely residential, no industrial parks, no strip-mall sprawl, and the locals call it the "City of Homes" for a reason. Downtown Detroit is under 15 miles away, about a 20-minute drive down Woodward or I-696. Buyers tend to be families who want a short commute, a strong school district, and a quiet street where neighbors actually know each other.

What Huntington Woods is known for

Three things anchor the city. The first is the Detroit Zoo. Most people associate it with Royal Oak (that's the mailing address), but the western portion of the zoo grounds sits inside Huntington Woods city limits, off Ten Mile Road and Woodward. Living a few blocks from a 125-acre zoo is not normal, and residents here treat it as a backyard amenity.
The second is Rackham Golf Course, an 18-hole public course that takes up roughly a fifth of the city's total land at its southern end. It's green space and recreation built into the footprint of a town that's otherwise wall-to-wall homes.
The third is the housing itself. Huntington Woods was built out mostly in the mid-20th century, and it kept its character. Tree-lined streets, well-kept lots, and a community that takes visible pride in upkeep. There's no big employer or corporate campus here, and that's the point. This is a place people live, not a place they commute into.
Small and tight-knit. With around 6,400 people packed into a mile and a half, you run into the same faces at the park, the zoo, and the school pickup line. The vibe is residential and family-driven, the kind of town where kids ride bikes and people wave from porches.
It does not have its own downtown. There's no main street with cafes and shops inside the city. What it has instead is location: Berkley, Royal Oak, and Ferndale are all minutes away, and each one brings its own dining and shopping scene. So you get the quiet of a residential pocket with three walkable-ish downtowns a short drive in any direction. For a lot of buyers, that trade works perfectly.

I-696 sits just south of the city and connects you east-west across the metro. Ten Mile and Eleven Mile roads form the north and south boundaries, and Coolidge Highway runs the west edge.

Is Huntington Woods a good place to buy?

For the right buyer, yes. You get a top-tier school district, a tiny tight community, the Detroit Zoo and a golf course as neighbors, and an under-20-minute line into downtown Detroit. The honest tradeoff is twofold. First, inventory is thin and homes hold value, so you'll likely pay a premium and may have to wait for the right house to come up. Second, there's no downtown inside the city, so you're driving to Royal Oak or Ferndale for nightlife and most shopping. If you want a quiet residential base with great schools and you're fine borrowing your neighbors' main streets, it's hard to beat. If you want to walk out your door to cafes and bars, look one town over.
The homes
The housing stock is mostly single-family homes from the mid-20th century, when the city did the bulk of its building. Expect established, classic suburban homes on manageable, well-maintained lots. Tudors, colonials, ranches, and bungalows are common, and many have been updated over the decades while keeping their original character. This is not a town of new construction. With just over 2,000 homes and almost no vacant land, inventory is genuinely limited, and that scarcity shapes the market.
Schools
Huntington Woods is served by the Berkley School District. Niche ranked Berkley the #16 best school district in Michigan and #7 in Oakland County for 2026, which is a real draw for families and a measurable factor in home values here. Many Huntington Woods students attend Norup International School, located just over the line in Oak Park, which serves Berkley district families.
