Second, Selfridge Air National Guard Base, which occupies a large stretch of the township's northern section and has operated here since 1917. Third, Lake St. Clair Metropark, a 770-acre park on the lakeshore that draws people from across Metro Detroit. The township leans into the "boat town" identity, and it earns it.
Quieter than the inner-ring suburbs, and more spread out. The population was 24,314 at the 2020 census, and the township covers about 24 square miles on paper, though a big chunk of that is water. You get a mix of canal-front and lakefront homes, postwar neighborhoods set back from the water, and pockets of newer construction. Summer is the busy season here. Boats go in, the Metropark fills up, and weekends revolve around the lake. Winter is slower and calmer. Lake St. Clair Metropark. Beach day, a walk through the nature center trails, the pool and waterslide in summer, or a round on the golf course. It's the one place locals and out-of-towners both end up.
Get on the water. Launch your own boat, rent one along Jefferson Avenue, or join one of the marinas and boat clubs along the canals.
Birdwatching and the marsh. The wetland habitat around the Clinton River mouth and the Metropark nature center is a real draw, not a footnote.
Waterfront dining. Spots along Jefferson Avenue and the canals trade on the view as much as the menu.
Fishing. Lake St. Clair is a well-known fishery, and access is easy from the township.

Is Harrison Township a good place to buy?

If you want the lake, yes. The boating culture, the Metropark, and the water access are real and hard to replicate elsewhere in Metro Detroit at these prices. The honest trade-off is that the market splits sharply on water access. Waterfront and canal homes carry a premium and can sit longer or move fast depending on the season, while interior homes behave more like the rest of Macomb County. If the water isn't your priority, you may get more house for the money a few miles inland. If it is, this is one of the few places near Detroit built entirely around it. Buy with a clear sense of which side of that line your home falls on.
The homes
The housing stock is mostly postwar and later, built out as the lake communities grew. You'll find single-story ranches and bungalows on the interior streets, canal-front homes with docks, and true lakefront properties along L'Anse Creuse Bay and the shoreline, plus newer builds and condos mixed in. Water access is the dividing line. Homes on a canal or the lake command a premium, and the further you get from the water, the more the prices look like a standard Macomb County suburb. Lot sizes and garage space tend to run generous, which suits a place where a lot of households own a boat.
Schools
The entire township is served by L'Anse Creuse Public Schools, a district headquartered in Clinton Township to the west that also covers parts of Chesterfield, Clinton, and Macomb townships. L'Anse Creuse High School - North holds a B overall grade on Niche (2026) and ranks among the better public high schools in the state. School boundaries inside a multi-township district can split by street, so confirm the assigned schools for any specific address before you make an offer.
